“Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)
Like all the sacraments, holy anointing was instituted by Christ throughout his ministry. Jesus showed compassion toward those who were sick and suffering, and through the priest, the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick extends God’s grace to those who are facing serious health challenges, surgery, or advanced age, gifting them with spiritual strength, peace, and courage to carry the cross of suffering.
